Longest Sea Bridge: PM Modi inaugurates Mumbai Trans Harbour Link https://traveldaayri.com/nature-destinations-travel/longest-sea-bridge-pm-modi-inaugurates-mumbai-trans-harbour-link/ Fri, 12 Jan 2024 15:49:04 +0000 https://traveldaayri.com/nature-destinations-travel/longest-sea-bridge-pm-modi-inaugurates-mumbai-trans-harbour-link/ [ad_1]

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated India’s longest sea-bridge — the 22-km long Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, or Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, here. He also became the first person to officially drive across the bridge which rises majestically in the Mumbai harbour areas, linking the Mumbai isle with the mainland.

PM Modi was flanked by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar at the inauguration ceremony that attracted huge local crowd to witness the unveiling of the giant engineering marvel.

The MTHL is considered the most challenging sea bridge project taken up in India and executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The bridge is expected to save commuting time from south Mumbai to Panvel (Raigad) from the existing around 120 minutes to barely 20 minutes, leading to a massive saving in fuel costs besides reducing pollution and CO2 hazards.

The MTHL will provide super-smooth connectivity to the Mumbai-Goa Highway, Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the Virar-Raigad corridor, the Navi Mumbai International Airport, the JNPA and MbPA twin ports, and serve as a new gateway to the development of the entire coastal Konkan region.

The bridge is considered an engineering marvel with a total length of 21.8 km, of which 16.5 km runs over the sea and other 5.5 km on land on both sides and elevated approach roads.

“Beyond simply reducing travel time, the bridge enhances our quality of life through the integration of modern and advanced technology. Environmental sustainability, longevity, security, and progress are among the fundamental purposes of this engineering marvel,” the MMRDA said on the inaugural of its biggest showpiece project.

29 projects worth INR 4,000 cr inaugurated in Punjab to improve inter state connectivity

Construction of these projects will increase safety and faster movement on the highways of the country. There will be a direct increase in religious pilgrimage sites and inter-state connectivity located in the project areas.

With the opening of the MTHL for regular traffic from January 13, the traffic snarls on both sides of the Mumbai Harbour would be history as vehicles will zip through the bridge in barely 20 minutes without affecting the environment or the Ramesar Site flamingo sanctuary below it. The high-speed MTHL corridor starts from Sewri in Mumbai to Chirle (island) on the Navi Mumbai side (mainland) to reduce commute time, air pollution, fuel costs and other benefits with a Rs 250 toll per car one-way for the first year, after which it will be reviewed.

It has been constructed of steel using the steel equivalent of 500 Boeing aircraft and weighs 17 times more than the Eiffel Tower of Paris.

Constructed at a cost of over INR 18,000 crore in seven years, the MTHL becomes the longest sea bridge built in India so far and ranks 12th of its kind in the world, including similar sea-links in China, the US, UAE and Portugal.

This event is scheduled to take place in Mumbai today and is a part of the ‘Dekho Apna Desh‘ initiative, aimed at encouraging middle-class tourists to explore more domestic travel options.

The Costa cruise voyages are scheduled to commence on November 4 and will continue operating until January 1.

Costa Cruises is expected to ferry around 45,000 passengers during its upcoming two-month voyages. This development offers an international cruising experience for Indians and also marks a significant step towards establishing India as a premier cruise destination. It also underscores the growing confidence of international cruise liners in India’s burgeoning cruise potential.

Costa Cruises had previously announced the domestic sailings of Costa Serena in November and December 2023. The cruise liner boasts a passenger capacity of 3,780 individuals spread across its 14 decks and offers a diverse selection of 10 restaurants. To board these domestic sailings, passengers are required to present their Aadhar Card as part of the boarding process.

Launching the domestic sailings for Costa Serena today, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister Sonowal emphasised on the government’s commitment to putting India on the global cruising map. During the recently concluded Global Maritime India Summit 2023, discussions also revolved around the ambitious goal of attracting 50 million cruise passengers to India by 2047. Given India’s immense potential in the maritime sector, this target is easily achievable, said Sonowal.

This year, India also achieved a significant milestone with the launch of the world’s longest river cruise, MV Ganga Vilas, which embarked on a journey from Varanasi, traversing 27 riverfronts to reach Dibrugarh in Assam, with a portion of the route extending through Bangladesh. Notably, this journey attracted the interest of 32 Swiss nationals and piqued the curiosity of both international and domestic tourists about cruising on Indian rivers.

Beyond the conventional sale of cruise packages, this partnership will look at crafting unforgettable moments, discovering uncharted territories and offer the experience of marine luxury to its patrons.

Speaking at the Global Maritime Summit, Minister Sonowal highlighted the cutting-edge infrastructure, advanced technology, and streamlined immigration procedures that have been put in place to enhance the cruise travel experience in India. In addition to Costa, three more international cruise liners will also begin their domestic sailings in India between November and December 2023.

To boost cruise tourism in India, the Government of India had entered into an agreement with these four globally renowned cruise lines, including Costa, setting a vision for 2041. According to a senior official from the Cochin Port Authority, these cruise ships collectively dominate 80 per cent of the cruise market.

A part of the Carnival Corporation & plc Group, Costa Cruises has 10 ships in service. Hotel rates expected to rise globally in 2024, Mumbai leads the chart among key cities, ET TravelWorld https://traveldaayri.com/adventure-travel/hotel-rates-expected-to-rise-globally-in-2024-mumbai-leads-the-chart-among-key-cities-et-travelworld/ Sat, 07 Oct 2023 12:06:03 +0000 https://traveldaayri.com/adventure-travel/hotel-rates-expected-to-rise-globally-in-2024-mumbai-leads-the-chart-among-key-cities-et-travelworld/ [ad_1]

The latest forecasts from American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT), consulting suggest that hotel rates are poised to continue their upward trajectory in 2024 across most global destinations. This trend is anticipated even as leisure travel demand is expected to soften.

The Hotel Monitor 2024 report, based on a comprehensive analysis of millions of hotel transactions and International Monetary Fund (IMF) economic data, predicts that several cities may see substantial rate increases of up to 17.5 per cent due to a combination of tight supply and local conditions driving room costs higher.

Most cities are expected to witness rate increases in line with local inflation. This follows substantial price hikes in 2022 and 2023, primarily driven by the surge in “revenge tourism.” The report anticipates that the softening demand for leisure travel will be offset by a continued rise in business travel and meetings and events.

There’s a noticeable increase in weekend corporate travel, and travellers are opting for fewer but longer business trips, indicating a growing trend of combining business travel with leisure activities.

In response to this shift, global hotel chains are expanding their extended stay offerings. Vacation rental companies are also observing increased requests for amenities like high-speed WiFi and late check-out times to accommodate remote work, suggesting that business travelers are seeking alternatives to traditional hotel accommodation.

Hotel rate rise in India?
According to Amex GBT report, India is expected to witness significant hotel rate increases in major cities, highlighting its position as a vital business travel market. As travel patterns continue to evolve, businesses and travellers alike will need to adapt to these changing dynamics in the hospitality sector.

In 2024, Mumbai is expected to have the highest growth rate in hotel rates among major Indian cities, with an increase of 15 per cent. Chennai follows closely behind with an expected hotel rate growth of 14.6 per cent. Meanwhile, Delhi is predicted to experience a hotel rate increase of approximately 12 per cent, and Bengaluru is expected to see significant growth in hotel rates at 11.1 per cent. Hyderabad is also anticipated to have a robust hotel rate increase of around 10.8 per cent.

The influence of inflation
While global inflation is showing signs of slowing down, it continues to impact room rates, particularly due to rising costs affecting hotel operating margins. Staff costs, notably hotel wages in the United States, have reached record levels in 2023.

This escalating cost base is disrupting the traditional relationship between supply and demand in the hotel industry. Hotel operators are increasingly limiting inventory to address staffing shortages, reduce overheads, and protect rates. Consequently, traveling during off-peak periods may no longer result in the same level of savings, as the correlation between rates and occupancy weakens.

India’s hospitality sector attracts USD 175 million in investments during H1 2023: JLL

JLL anticipates that this positive momentum in the hospitality sector will continue into the second half of 2023, with an estimated transaction volume of around USD 88 million (INR 722 crore), extending into 2024. This optimistic outlook is underpinned by the industry’s robust performance, driven by strong macroeconomic fundamentals, a thriving commercial market, and improved air connectivity.

Building effective hotel program
After absorbing significant rate increases in 2023, travel buyers are under pressure to manage costs. Additionally, there is a growing emphasis on meeting sustainability commitments, adding another layer of complexity to program development.

To adapt to these changes, travel buyers should reassess existing arrangements and prioritize negotiating better rates, improved terms, and additional amenities in frequently visited hotels and cities. Concentrating spending on a smaller number of providers can help secure favorable rates, enhanced terms, and other benefits, even for smaller businesses.

Simon Fishman, Vice President, Global Hotel at Amex GBT, commented on the report, stating, “With the softening of leisure travel demand, we and our corporate customers have an improved position at the negotiating table, meaning we can make even more rates available to travelers.”

He added, “It’s also the right time to make sure a hotel program is fit for the future. More than ever, it’s about presenting travelers with relevant and personalised options. One might want the best rate, while another will prioritise amenities and experience.”

The Mumbai airport had issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) six months in advance, thereby providing ample time for airlines and other stakeholders to plan their flight schedules accordingly. This proactive approach ensures that flight operations are not disrupted.

The airport authorities have expressed their gratitude for the cooperation and support of passengers during this essential maintenance period.

CSMIA said this comprehensive post-monsoon runway maintenance represents another step in safeguarding the airport’s operational integrity. “The temporary closure on October 17 is a crucial component of these efforts to ensure safe, efficient, and seamless air travel experiences for all passengers.”

Vistara is starting direct flights between Mumbai and Frankfurt on November 15, 2023. The airline already has flights to Frankfurt from Delhi, which have been popular since its launch in February 2021. Vistara will use a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with three different cabin options – Business, Premium Economy, and Economy.

Vistara has been growing its presence in Mumbai, connecting the city to 12 international destinations, including Abu Dhabi, Bangkok, Colombo, Dammam, Dhaka, Dubai, Jeddah, London Heathrow, Male, Mauritius, Muscat, and Singapore. Vistara’s CEO, Vinod Kannan, said that they are happy to expand their international network with the Mumbai-Frankfurt route. Vistara’s Delhi-London Heathrow, Paris, and Frankfurt routes have proven popular with customers, which gives them the confidence to offer similar connections from Mumbai. This is their second long-haul route from Mumbai, in addition to their 5x weekly flights to London Heathrow.

The flights are subject to necessary regulatory approvals.
